morir soñando
a traditional dominican orange juice drink that translates into “die dreaming”, what a damn good name for a drink!
This recipe is a staple comfort beverage in EVERY, SINGLE Dominican household! Its sweet, its creamy and citrusy. It pairs best (in my opinion) with some crunchy tostones y huevos fritos or longaniza for my fellow meat eaters out there ;) If you’ve never had one, get to it! I’m sure you have all the ingredients on hand right now and I promise you won’t stop craving this to die for beverage!
You’ll probably notice that I didn’t add any measurements to the ingredients below. And that’s because this recipe is almost impossible to mess up! But more importantly it’s best when its made to cater to all your individual tastes; some people like it sweeter, some prefer it on the creamier side and others might want it to have more OJ than anything else. So be sure to taste along the way and adjust accordingly. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS
orange juice / roughly 2 parts OJ and 1 part milk
evaporated milk
sugar
vanilla extract / or dominican white vanilla
fresh lime juice
lots of ice
DIRECTIONS
Select a large container or pitcher and add your orange juice.
Sweeten your orange juice with sugar to taste, keeping in mind that it should be on the sweeter side. Using a whisk helps to thoroughly mix the two together.
Remember to taste along the way and adjust accordingly. Add a generous squeeze of lime to the mix, and about a teaspoon of vanilla per serving. Stir to combine.
Add lots of ice to the your pitcher.
Here’s the slightly tricky part, you might want to seek out an extra pair of hands if you don’t feel coordinated enough for the job * raises hand *. You’re going to stir your orange juice mixture while drizzling in the evaporated milk at the same time. If you don’t continuously stir then the acidity might sour the milk.
Once it’s all incorporated and the orange juice has married nicely with the evaporated milk, your tasty treat is ready!
