blueberry mint julep

Each year, over 100,000 mint juleps are sipped on at The Kentucky Derby!

May 30th marks National Mint Julep Day, and its inching closer and closer. And I don’t know about you guys, but I love me some bourbon! As soon as the temperature starts to rise and happy hour outings are sunshine filled I can’t help but start to crave an ice cold mint julep. This recipe has a small, juicy twist . . . blueberries! As we welcome the season of longer days, hot weather and hopefully more time around the pool, make yourself and your loved ones this twist on an American classic! Hope you all enjoy!

DIRECTIONS FOR THE SIMPLE SYRUP

  1. In a small saucepan, add 1 cup of water and sugar. Mix and bring to a boil.

  2. Once the sugar is dissolved, remove from heat.

  3. Add simple syrup mixture into your glass container. Place in fridge, and cool overnight.

  4. You can store the simple syrup in an airtight container (i use a mason jar) in the fridge for about a month.

DIRECTIONS FOR THE COCKTAIL

  1. Before you start making your cocktail, place your glass in the freezer for about 20 minutes. We want a nicely frosted glass to keep your drink nice and cool, longer.

  2. Muddle blueberries, mint, simple syrup and your choice of bourbon in the frosted glass.

  3. Give everything a stir, to ensure that all the flavors and sugars are thoroughly combined.

  4. Fill your glass with crushed ice. Garnish the cocktail with a sprig of mint and enjoy!
